More about "Trumpet - The Chromatic Bugle"

Chromatic Scales

  • Chromatic scales form the foundation of fluid technique in the language of music.  Chromaticism is created on the bugle (trumpet) by playing chromatic clusters on the same harmonic level.  The chapter begins with seven-note chromatic clusters and continues until you have formed all 15 chromatic clusters.  The exercises then progress to one, two and three octave chromatic scales which are slurred and single-tongued.

Chromatic Patterns

  • Nine patterns of interwoven chromatic scales moving in different melodic directions appear. Exercises and etudes use single, double and triple tonguing articulation. Once they are accomplished, the challenge is to double the tempo.

Chromatic Intervals

  • Chromatic interval studies are slow-motion exercises to focus your attention on air-speed changes to aid flexibility.

Whole Tone Scales, Patterns, Arpeggios and Intervals

  • Whole tone scales are created by playing every other note of a chromatic scale.
  • Whole tone patterns present a more complicated exploration of whole tone scales.
  • Whole tone arpeggios use every other note of the whole tone scale. With these exercises, you create two sets of augmented (Major 3rd) arpeggios.  They will develop your musical ear and increase your flexibility.
  • Whole tone intervals are studies that enhance tonal stability and endurance.
  • Whole tone scales, patterns, arpeggios and intervals will expand your technique of “bugle-ness”.
